(Infographic) 10 Step Strategy for Exploding Your Social Media Following

I was recently perusing Google, looking for good content to share with my audience when I found a very interesting blog post onΒ BufferApp.com. Buffer is the extremely powerful tool for scheduling social media posts, much like HootSuite, but simplified.

The infographic talked about 10 powerful steps you can take to attract more social media followers and more important build a thriving community around your brand.

The infographic is here…

Via BufferApp.com

Via BufferApp.com

Here is my take on this advice, and why I think it is valuable:

1. Post great content

First thing is first, the most important thing you can ever do on social media is post great content. You could have every strategy in the world for getting followers and you could even be willing to pay money to attain followers and fans, but if you aren’t posting content that people actually want to read and find useful, you’re doomed.

The good news is, it’s easy to post great content. See my previous blog post for some ideas.

2. Write a professional bio

I talk about the importance of this in my book, Taking Flight: Build High-Profit Relationships for Your Business with Twitter. Keep your bio clean and short. Don’t add fluff, and don’t saturate your bio with links to all your great accomplishments or many projects. Pick the one or two things you are currently up to and CLEARLY explain what you do, and who you serve.

That way, you attract the right people, and repel the wrong people.

3. Use hashtags

Hashtags are not something I go wild over, but I do think they are good for capitalizing on trends. Just don’t go overboard.

Check out #5 on this list.

4. Place a widget on your blog

This is a biggie. To be honest, do I even have a widget on my blog?? I just may not. Guess that’s a solid amount of social media followers I could have had, but do not. Don’t make the same mistake I am currently making, go get a dang widget on you blog.

At least my other website, http://Attitudes4Innovation.com has plenty of social widgets πŸ˜‰

5. Engage with others

This on the other hand, is something I do take part in. Anybody who met me via Twitter knows that I am constantly engaging with new people and making new connections. Twitter specifically, is fantastic for engaging and making initial connections that can then turn into strong relationships. Again, I talk about this in my book, Taking Flight (not that I am trying to sell you or anything πŸ˜‰

6. Create shareable content

This goes hand in hand with the first point, so I am simply going to refer you over to another post I published a few months ago on this blog. Get out there and post content that is worth being shared!

7. Reshare others’ content

I like this one because it provides value to other people. Chances are, it is going to be providing value to other influencers in your industry, because those tend to be the people who post content worth sharing.

Share, Re-Pin it, retweet it. You don’t have to go overboard. Just be aware of what’s being posted and share the interesting stuff with the button and widgets that are in front of you. Sharing has never been more simple. Provide value and value will be returned to you in waves.

8. Reach out to other influencers

Aha! Now I’ll bet you wish you followed tip #7 so you were already on the influencers’ radar! πŸ˜‰

Do what you can to reach out to people who have strong audiences on social media. Chances are, if they are doing social right, they will be responding to you. They want to build a relationship with you just as much as you do with them. And the difference is that they can probably provide significantly more value. Embrace that truth, and be thankful and keep reaching out.

9. Stay active

This seems to be the biggest challenge for people, including myself. But the fact of the matter is, you have got to stay active with your social efforts. Post on a daily basis and stay up-to-date with people who are trying to connect with you. Don’t ignore people and don’t ignore your social platforms.

A strategy for keeping up-to-date with social media is to outsource it on sites like oDesk and Elance.

10. Follow other users

This is the BEST way to get more followers. Specifically on Twitter, but also on other sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Following others is the best way to get others to follow you back, and if you do it on a mass scale and incorporate tactics such as unfollowing, you can really attract a large following fast.

I have a FREE eBook that goes deeper into this process, if your interested. Check it out here.

These are 10 solid tips for good Twitter presence, and I like how you added your own prespectives on why each of them is important.

Alex, here’s an idea for taking this to the next level: illustrate these tips with examples (both good and bad) so we can see what effective engagement looks like.

    Thanks!

Great post and great information! I’m using Twitter and Instagram a lot lately and this post helps a lot. The Buffer app is a real valuable piece of tech that helps save me a lot of time, I have mine now connected to sniply which lets you put a call to action on anything you share with buffer. Sniply and buffer as a combination is a winner for social media marketing, check sniply out at my website http://snip.ly/kkDl

Great post, Alex. I started following more people on Twitter and my number of followers has blown up! I blog and I’m creating some good stuff, which I feel has value and will help others, but what good is it if no one reads it?

Excellent article and I agree with the 10 points you make except I personally have reservations with outsourcing unless it is done by someone you really trust. Online reputations can be destroyed in an instant by careless comments as seen recently on Fox News by the ill-informed and uneducated.

There is no doubt that social media is changing the world. Much of it for the better. I personally have ignored much of it, primarily because a lot of it is, to me, white noise and upsell. There is nothing wrong with upselling, we all need to put food on to the table. However, providing real informational and valuable content, help and mentorship is something we all should aspire to.

Perhaps then we too, can help change the world into a better place for everyone by affording genuine interaction, valuable relationships and guidance.

Great advises Alex, thanks you for sharing! I’d like the article even more if you’d added some useful applications. I think they’re a crucial time-saver, so i’m always looking for new ones luckily they’re released quite often. I personally use about 5+ different apps on daily basis. I can’t imagine editing without Whitagram and VSCO Cam because i don’t like instagram’s everlasting filters. Efficient management is impossible without detailed statistics, so Iconosquare.com is my choice. When it comes to following management i use fast-unfollow.com to easily get rid of up to 5000 users not following me back in one day. And finally a scheduler – latergram.me in my case – to keep posting consistently. For most of these apps there are analogues, but always inferior: they have either higher price or fewer functions. If you know some interesting apps please do suggest them to me, i’d highly appreciate that πŸ˜‰
