6 Social Media Stats You NEED To See

A lot of people ask me why I only post blog posts every two weeks, rather than every week. The reason is 1) Time: I only have so much time to put up the AMAZING content I do, and 2) You guys don’t need more content. You need less of the right content and information.Β That is what I am attempting to provide to you. So let’s get into this week’s article πŸ™‚

I have to tell you, I learn new stuff about social media every single day. And if there is one thing I learned over everything else, it is this: The proof is in the pudding.Β There are numbers and stats that come out every week stating which platform is the best to market on and why you need to drop everything and focus on that. My take is a bit different. I believe that all social media platforms are GREAT to market on. It is simply a matter of what works for you and what makes the most sense for your business.

The reason that my business primarily focuses on helping businesses with Twitter is 1) Because I know Twitter and have developed the best system in the world for making Twitter work for business, and 2) Because I think Twitter is one of the hottest places to market on right now (contrary to many of the stats below), and it just flat out works.

With all this being said, I am going to throw some new stats at you that you may find interesting. But don’t lose site of what you are doing. Remember this: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube are ALL amazing places to market. So use them all to some extent and figure out what works best for you (or ask for advice), rather than believing that certain platforms are better than the other.

Here we go:

1) Instagram has now surpassed Twitter in users

Now why the heck would I share this if I literally just told you that my business is primarily focusing on Twitter? Because I don’t believe in framing information to make my business sound cooler and better. You deserve to know the facts.

Now, with this being said, I still believe that Twitter is better for marketing in most cases.

1) Larger age demographics are on Twitter.Β

2) Instagram makes it difficult to click links to external webpages. Meaning it is great for brand awareness, but can be difficult for any form of direct marketing.

This is just food for thought.

Via SkillCrush.com

2) Snapchat grows by 56% per year and is worth $10 billionΒ

This is cool because…well just look. $10 billion!? That’s awesome. Although it is primarily the younger audience that is on Snapchat, I think it is an interesting platform that anyone who is looking to target a younger market should look into.

3) June 2014: Facebook gets more video views than YouTube

This is VERY HARD TO BELIEVE. They say it was due to the “autoplay” that Facebook implemented on it’s videos. But even with that, I’m not sure if I can TRULY believe this fact. Nevertheless, the fact that this information is public is something to think about. It means that we should think about posting more videos to our Facebook pages, because they are being seen more and more.

Via RankRanger.com

Via RankRanger.com

4) Organic posts on Facebook continue to drop in engagement, and are shown to less people

This is a smart move on Facebook’s part, because they are forcing brands to spend money to boost their exposure. In my opinion, this is fair. Facebook has the users, so they deserve to be paid dearly for their database. I think they are more than fair to anyone who wants promote their business; it’s dang cheap. It’s annoying to businesses that aren’t looking to spend money on social marketing (in which case, Twitter is great), but can also be powerful if done correctly.

Just keep in mind that “building up a lot of fans” on Facebook is not as valuable as it used to be.

5) Instagram gets 50X more engagement than Twitter

Now before you smack me over the head and tell I’m nuts for spreading this fact, let me explain. Instagram is obviously growing like wildfire. I think everyone should keep their eye out for what’s to come.

BUT, like I said before, Instagram is hard to direct market. People like it because they get to see cool pictures and then not worry about any external links. They have done an amazing job of keeping a tight knit community within Instagram. Where as Twitter is great for spreading links and getting your webpages exposed (not all of them, but if you are tweeting enough of the right stuff, some will catch on).

6) Facebook is now responsible for 15.8% of all internet traffic

Just another reason why at the very least, put a little effort into Facebook, regardless of the fact that it is saturated with marketers (I started reading a book on Facebook Group Marketing yesterday, I recommend checking it out. It’s a different spin on typical Facebook marketing).

Sure is good to know the stats of each social media website, I found Twitter to be a useful tool to gain a great audience, with the hashtags thrown into tweets so it shows up for people that are interested in that, great article Alex, Twitter does rule!!

Excellent Post! I like the fact that you go for quality and not quantity. I have been blogging for 3 years Monday-Friday. Check out The Quotable Coach at http://www.thequotablecoach.com. I just published my book with 365 posts entitled The Quotable Coach- Daily Nuggets of Practical Wisdom in Amazon. Each post is intended to take 30 seconds or less to read. Any thought you may have would be most welcome.

Hi Alex. I have read your article. It is interesting that there is no mention of Linkedin. I used facebook, paying & and not paying for adverts and I found no difference in traffic to my website or contact being made. I am using linkedin, I really don’t see the benefit in it. I am using twitter and yes there is a lot of communication on this platform but again I have to say that the business figures for me does not reflect my participation.
I will continue to use these platforms but I do think that in order to make the best of your business, we have to go back to face to face selling. I know this does not suit a lot of online businesses but maybe these platforms best suit online selling.
It is a well devised blog, well done!

      Peter-

Thank you so much for your comment πŸ™‚ Yes, I agree with you that Linkedin is important as well. It’s not in my area of expertise, which is the only reason I don’t really talk about.

Face to face selling is a biggie. I do agree that selling is THE FIRST priority. Social media media, Twitter especially, is used as tool to generate initial exposure and build initial relationships with lots of people. We don’t necessarily expect instant ROI, but it has become the broadcast medium and allows anyone who knows how to develop a large audience become a mini-celebrity.

      Hope this helps.

      Alex

Thanks for sharing this great post! I have to agree with most of what you said. I do think one the biggest differences between Twitter and Instagram is more diversity in the demographics of Twitter users. The ability to instantly drive traffic with a link via Twitter makes it more effective than Instagram in some cases. Everyone has to find what works best for them, but using all social media outlets can be beneficial, as long as you don’t spend too much time on the sites that are not as effective for you. Please remember to interact with followers and don’t just use automated posts. Personal interactions can go a long way! Thanks, Alex!

I saw the previous comments about LinkedIn, and I think the platform is too business-like (i.e., no fun) for younger people. LinkedIn has an audience, and it cannot capture the younger market without changing dramatically. It is what it is, and I appreciate that.

Linkedin has it’s purposes. So does Twitter and FB. They all do, and it’s about what works for your business and market.

These are great tips. I completely agree with you about Facebook and Twitter – for one brand I manage, I’ve seen phenomenal results from Facebook with paid promotion. (Very high engagement as well, with high quality content.)Now I’m thinking i need to give Instagram a shot πŸ™‚

Younger age demographics are drawn to shorter, more graphical, and more “efficient” communication media — so snapchat, instagram, etc, rapidly becoming the go-to media, and facebook and twitter being relegated to the “background” of people’s lives.

I don’t know that it’s permanent…I expect we’ll see a balancing out of various media, even as new ones get added to the mix.

I have a feeling the “short” media is growing because of the younger demographics short attention spans
