5 Tips for Launching Holiday Social Media Campaigns

With the holiday season fast upon us, lots of companies are seizing the opportunity to effectively grab the attention of their customers. Since this is also the busiest time for many businesses, it’s also a great opportunity for them to get their brand out there and to stand out from competitors.

Of course, a great way to reach your audience and potential customers is through your existing social media platforms.

So what steps can a business take to get the most out of utilizing social media during the holidays? Lisa Parkin shares five tips that you can use to get your brand in the spotlight this holiday season!

1. Put the emphasis on popular items

Curated content is all the rage these days, so why not create something similar for your business?

Identify some of your best sellers and focus on writing blog and social media posts that shine the spotlight on those items. Some examples would be putting together a list like “10 Gifts Dad Will Love This Christmas!” or “15 Can’t Miss Items For Your Office Gift Exchange.”

Another approach is what retailer World Market is currently doing. On their front page, they have a section devoted to showcasing their 15 most popular items on Pinterest. This is a terrific way to quickly show customers what your most loved merchandise is and entice people to check out what else you have to offer.

2. Offer a contest or giveaway

Offering something for free when people are probably spending more money than they have in months will garner some positive feelings with your audience. This is extra great if the offer is something that the winner could pass along as a gift to a loved one.

In early November when the red Starbucks holiday cups made their triumphant return, Starbucks encouraged people to take pictures of their red cups and post them on multiple social media platforms with the hashtag #redcupcontest for a chance to win a limited edition gift card.

That was a great way to generate a little buzz while giving their audience a positive feeling about the potential of getting something for free in exchange for minimal effort.

3. Get started early with blog posts

It’s important to utilize your blog and plan on sharing one or two gift giving ideas in the weeks leading up to the holiday season. The earlier you start, the better your chances of those posts showing up higher in search results and boosting traffic to your site.

There’s still time to try it this season, but this tip will certainly be something to keep in mind next year.

4. Be ready for anything

Chances are good that your business will see an increase in communication from customers over social media. Be mindful of peak shopping days like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas Eve and have a plan in place in terms of response protocol and how to respond to general inquiries.

If you’re working with a team, make sure to communicate these standards to them in order to maintain a consistent response to customers.

5. Know when to give it a rest

This concept is super simple. Take break from promoting on major holidays and focus on wishing your audience a happy day. Keep things fun and celebratory! Also, you worked really hard over the last few weeks promoting your brand, so you probably earned a well deserved break, too!

Do you have a social media strategy for the holidays? What has been working for you? Please share in the comments below!

Great post. Don’t forget the value of retweets and tagging other businesses. I have seen a core group of local businesses promoting each other’s wines, coffees, candles in a way that can’t help but warm the heart. ♡ I would love to see something similar for non-retail firms like say an engineering design firm.

Great blog posts, Alex! I definitely agree with the last one. It’s great to know about which popular, specialty items are on sale during the holiday season, and who doesn’t love a great giveaway or sweepstakes, right? But with so many holiday advertisement messages coming from so many different companies, sometimes it’s really good to know when it’s good to push and when to stop and get into the spirit of the season with your audiences!
