4 Step Super Strategy for Finding New Customers on Social Media

As many small business owners will tell you, a successful social media strategy goes beyond scheduling timely posts to maintain a consistent presence. There’s also developing active and engaged audiences by identifying content they would find relevant, as well as carving out time to give thoughtful responses to comments and feedback.

While these are effective ways to strengthen your existing audience, it might not be doing much to attract new customers to your business.

So what are some ways to bring in new customers? Allison Davis shares four easy steps you can take to identify and connect with the audience best suited for your business.

1. Who is your target audience?

First identify what kind of problem your product sets out to solve. Say your company offers graphic design services for small businesses. You would use a real-time search feature to find posts and conversations on social media and identify people using keywords that would indicate that they’re looking for design help.

Once you locate people who might be in need of your services, you can determine which social networks they use most frequently, which kind of content seems to produce the most engagement or times of day your posts will have the best audience exposure. This is all great information to reference for later use and future audience outreach efforts.

2. Find useful hashtags and keywords

Now it’s time to identify which hashtags are relevant to your business and monitor them using a service like Tagboard. These hashtags can include ways to identify your target audience, your company name or a hashtag you created for customers to use, and hashtags where you’d like to join the conversation and offer your expertise.

3. Engage with the right audiences

After you’ve found conversations that you have determined to be relevant to your business, you can chime in and share your knowledge with potential customers. Just like you would in real life, ease into the conversation at the right time and try not to butt into it. If you come across questions you have answers to, offer your help and seize the opportunity to win over a potential customer with your expertise.

4. Effective call to action

Once you’re ready to start engaging with your newly found audience, it’s crucial to implement an effective call to action in order to direct future interactions beyond social media. Call to action posts are more likely to elicit engagement from your followers in the form of likes, follows, shares, retweets, favorites, etc.).

Your call to action doesn’t always have to be directly associated with the services you provide.

In fact, research has shown that an effective approach to content is focusing about 20% of it on your product and around 50% on engagement-related activity like sharing entertaining information, inviting a conversation, asking questions or sharing images and videos. The remaining 30% is reserved for sharing curated content and industry news and tips.

Great insights. Especially loved the effective call to action. Any advice for effective calls to action for unpublished authors? I tried a non-monetary gofundme account as a call for action to get Facebook author page likes http://www.gofundme.com/gfxj08 Not sure if it’s effective or not yet.

    Hi Alex,

Like the 4 steps. I would perhaps follow Paul Shapiro’s recommendation at the end of Point 4 by asking How have you been successful finding new customers through social media. Reading his blog he considers an improved response to uptake from “How” questions.
I would also suggest a Step 5, Setting up a LinkedIn Group where as the initiator, having undertaken some research on whom you would like to attract as potential new customers, this can be a forum for inviting your targeted contacts to join your group as part of a blended social media strategy and uses a platform which has a higher probability over some other sm sites for reaching key decision-makers in a business.

    All good things!
    Pamela

Logical & Concise – well thought out. We like #4, especially – too many new advertisers forget the hook; the Call To Action… i.e., “What’s in it for me?” Good stuff!

    1. Who is your target audience?
Great answer to that question. “Identify what kind of problem your product sets out to solve.” Once you develop your brand and your branding efforts (your market identity)–then your products or services should be and will be the answer to those problems.
    Thank you for great post.

I wonder, through my personal experience, that social media is more effective for kind of products/services that rely on technology to sustain. But for businesses like food vending, food catering- where your reach and span of control to cater to customers is constrained by geography and logistic it does not have desired impact. I am planning to start food catering business in India. Can you suggest me ways to make an explosive impact on prospective customer through social media?
